_Our team logo ( Imagine.achive.unity)_

HEPTEX

Heptax is a multi-disciplinary housing, building and planning firm that aspire to find greater meaning in all of our actions and are never satisfied with the status quo. The five purposes below are the fundamental values of our practice. These values are more than abstract beliefs: they are the foundation for what drives all of us in all our actions and at every level of our group.

The unity from our multi-disciplinary team allows us to imagine designs that will challenge the status quo and to achieve high quality in building construction. The two leafs in the middle of our logo represents unity. Gold is used to shows our ability to achieve high standards.

Site analysis

site location, land use and traffic

The proposed site for the amphitheater is located on an open space, hill slope next to the School of Housing, Building and Planning (HBP) in Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM).

To examine the traffic, all roads leading to the proposed site were examined and road category determined. Next to the proposed site is Jalan Canselori which is a street road that has relatively slow traffic compared to other roads in the university. The main users of this road are students and staff from the School of HBP. It is also a road that can be accessed by the local university bus system. Hence, the visitors to the amphitheater will not have problem getting there via public transport. In fact, there is a bus stop at the entrance to the proposed amphitheater site.

To the other side of the proposed site is a building for HBP as well as an electrical house and water tank. The area behind the electrical house and water tank is the USM boundary, which runs along a major, busy road, Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah. Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah is a leading road to the Bayan Baru, Penang FTZ area. As such, the site is affected by noise from Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah road. Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah is an arterial road that leads to Jalan Lim Chong Eu freeway as well as to Penang Bridge.

The sun path was investigated between 8-10am and after 4pm. Our assumption is that these are the hours where events are most likely to place at the amphitheater. Assuming our stage and amphitheater will be sea front facing, the sun will rise from the left of the stage and set on the right of the stage. As such, we are not typically concern as to whether to orientate the amphitheater to be perpendicular to Jalan Canselori or perpendicular to the nearest HBP building.

hydrology and drainage

The drainage is located on the top of the slope near Jalan Canselori. This drain is sufficient to accommodate the rainwater even during the monsoon season.

vegetation

Most of the vegetation that exists in this area is palm tree and rain tree. The palm tree has been on the proposed site for more than 20 years while the raintree is at least 60 years old. The trees do not really provide any shades as they are sparsely grown. The distance between one tree to another is at least 5-10meters. Due to the maturity of the tree, we have decided to keep the trees as part of our landscape.

lighting

Heptax decided to use lighting that will “light” the actor for maximum visibility and maximum modeling, with minimum shadow. To do this, the basic compromise lighting will be used whereby a pair of beams crossing on to the actor (one for each side of the face) from positions that are both forward and to the side of the actor. The suggested angle is often around 45 degrees in both directions.

Step lighting will also be installed on each step of the staircase to keep patrons safe when it is dark. Street lighting will be installed around the amphitheater to keep the area bright in the evening.

Building construction for stage

roofting and side walls

Here are the following materials required for stage roofing. The curve shaped roof will be supported by both the right and left wall panels. Top steel plates will be used to fasten the roof metal cladding to the left and right wall panels.

Roofing and Side Walls
Material Required
Outside sheeting
Metal clad
Frame
Glued laminated timber (Glulam)
Inside finishing
Wood plastic composite

back wall

Back Wall
Material Required
Façade/Finishing
Clear acrylic glass to form mosaic design, glass cutter
Frame for acrylic glass
Lead cane, solder, glaze
“X” frame
2”x4” Timber

The back wall with its glass mosaic design is definitely the highlight of the amphitheater that is complicated to build. Each piece of clear acrylic glass will need to be traced/cut according to its unique design. The glasses are then soldered to the lead to give it structural integrity. Finally a layer of glaze is applied to the joints to prevent water from sipping through. These glass mosaic is supported by a 2”x4” “X” frame timber.

foundation and flooring

The soil condition (clayey) and steepness of slope were key factors when deciding the right type of foundation for construction. Heptax decided to go with a pad foundation. This type of foundation usually refers to those being rested on stratum with adequate bearing capacity and laid less than 3meters below ground level.

Foundation
Material Required
Reinforced concrete pad
Concrete
Column stump
2”x4” timber
Flooring
Cengal timber

Several flooring options was considered by the team, such as, cengal, engineered hardwood floor or concrete. Engineered hardwood floor was eliminated due to its less water resistant nature of the product. Finally cengal, although more expensive was chosen because of its durability, weather proof quality and aesthetic.

6XT (A) PROJECT : DESIGN AN AMPHITHATRE

"IN THE NAME OF ALLAH THE MOST GRACIOUS AND THE MOST MERCIFUL"

For the project 6, I would say that this might be the biggest project in this semester. In this project we have to build and design the amphitheater ( for 'live performance' function ) that includes the aspects of site analysis, architectural and interior design, structure and material selection, simple costing, project management, and construction technique. So, that means in a group of 16 members we have to built this amphitheater  and manage this project like in our real life. each group  consist of 7 different major and every member should participate in this project based on their knowledge and ability in certain work. some student in our group are expert in calculation and account, so they handle the quantity surveyor part, some others else expert in gain the information regarding the site analysis but for us , we doing more than that. each member give full responsibilities in this project. we combines our idea in everything, every members are free to gives their idea and I am proud to have them as a team.

for the design, at first stage we all decides to make a simple sketch on the amphitheater. so every one should gives at least one of their ideas on what kind of concept and stage that they wanted it to look like. so we just upload it on facebook and who gets the "like" the most, means that his/her design will be selected. so, i've come out with my design which is

taraaaaaa!!!

concept : The transformation of Angular

BIG NO TO MY DESIGN!! (^_^")

because lots of aspect need to be considered on my stage design, so, as for the result we all together had decide to choose our leader design which the concept was inspired by the Lotus Flower as our final design.

here it is.. tingggg!!!

_ presentation board on each view of the stage_

This design is created from the lotus flower concept with integration of transformation of angular concept. the lotus flower has a lot of meaning to most Asian traditions like India, China and Japan especially. The figure shows that the drawing of our final design. The bud of lotus flower that we can see it from the roof and also the wall shape. there totally have 4 walls inside. Beside, the stage is covered with 3 roof which is lotus flower bud shape, then, the front part of roof side and backdrop have integrated with the concept of transformation of angular which is representative the structure of leaf.

_Site plan_

as for the landscape, me and Najwa planned together to design a green environment and also considerate to the people with disabilities.  we put lots of trees in our design because of two main point, first is because of the amphitheaters location  is placed near to the traffic, so its will effect the sound of the performance and will makes the audience feel uncomfortable. to avoid that, as you can see at the bottom left of the picture, it is a lots of trees have been planted to create the baffle zone for the amphitheater. besides that the trees also can filter up the contaminated air around the place, trees will soak up the polluted air and release the fresh air to the surrounding.

Thats all for today... bye.. Assalamualaikum.. (wish I could do  better than the previous project especially on the presentation session). Thank you everyone!! (^_^)v

5TH PROJECT : SENSE OF PLACE ( NEIGHBORHOOD AND COMMUNITY)

" I THE NAME OF ALLAH, THE MOST GRACIOUS AND THE  MOST MERCIFUL "

Assalamualaikum..

Hye everyone..

for the project 5 we have to choose one of these 6 neighborhood areas from the list below :

  • Bayan Residences, relau, penang
  • Sunway Mutiara, batu Maung, penang
  • Sunway Bukit Gmbier , penang
  • Siara 81, Sg. Ara, Penang
  • Sunway Merica, Sg. Ara, Penang
  • Setia Greens, Sg.Ara, penang

we need to make a site visit to our chosen site to get the information and details for our project.

I choose Sunway Merica, Sg Ara as my analysis site. on 19th oct me and Putri together go to the Sunway Merica travelling by bus. its not very hard to find that residential area because it is located beside to Mutiara Perdana school. The analysis going smoothly because the weather is good earlier, but in the end its raining but not too heavy, besides the guard was very kind, because he know that we went there for an education survey. so he just ask me and Putri to buy him coffee as a treat for let us in. (^_^)..

for the rest, let the picture do the talk.. hehe (^_^)..

4TH PROJECT : PRESENTATION DRAWING

" IN THE NAME OF ALLAH, THE MOST GRACIOUS AND THE MOST MERCIFUL "

hye.....

This project is about presentation, presentation and... presentation.. i felt disappointed to my self  because i had given an opportunity by the lecturer to talk in front of the students but i ruined it. (-_-).. i don't know why, maybe i'm too nervous so that i could not present it well. I do realize that most of the student did not understand what i am trying to say because of the low tone of my voice that i am using.

start from today, i will motivate my self to built up my confident level especially on talking in front lots of people. i've ask the expert advice regarding this matter and  she told me to join the public speaking classes in order to improve my presentation skill, speech and also improve my confident. I'm not alone here, because Alaa Hamed and my other friend named Munawara also interested to join this class,  InsyaAllah, when there's a will, there's a way. (^_^)..

Thanks to Dr. Syarmila because she help me a lot in this project. especially on how to make my drawing look more nicer and realistic and also how to make shadow in my drawing ( perspective drawing ) and (axonometrix drawing ). Thank you so much, I'm really-really appreciate it and will keep remember her advice for the coming project.
